The Start of Our Creative Business

Sorry to disappear on ya'll like that!  As I hinted to in a previous post Brett and I are starting our market booth and online shop.  I have been on the go with work and setting up our shop.  Amazing how quickly a week goes by!!

I was asked to blog about our dive into owning a creative business and share some of our tips.  Let me tell you, there is a lot to this!!!!!

We decided a few weeks ago that we want to sell our projects and art.  We had been thinking about selling at the Idalia Market Place and online for over a year and last month We decided to do it!  We put aside our common excuse of "do we have time?" and just did it!

This Saturday I give my application for our first booth.  We will be at the Idalia Market Place on June 15th!  So exciting to have a date!

I am not even joking but after we handed the money over we jumped into the FJ Cruiser and panicked a little.  We didn't have a name for our booth..... crafts were not done..... taxes??... license??...  It kind of hit us at once.

Brett is not a planner but I am :)  He is the creative one and I have my moments.  We decided to divide and conquer.  He would get started on our projects and I would get started on compulsively researching and planning everything.

Quickly my list grew to this
*biz name
*Domain- purchase
*contact Volusion about switching my store front
*set up email
*set up facebook
*set up twitter
*create a banner
*create a few smaller signs
*bank acct
*city license
*state license
*accounting software
*press release
*metal dogs (brett)
*my crafts
*switch paypal reader to biz name
*bags
*biz cards
*price tags
*cash holder
*displays
*custom order form (brett metal dogs)

This was off the top of my head!  Then I panicked for a minute.

After relaxing and watching some hockey I started to tackle this list. To help me wrap my brain around the list I decided to put things in order of importance.

#1- Name
A business name should reflect your business.  Our booth and store will mostly metal work, crafts and recycled art.  After some research we decided on "Gone Junkin'"

#2- Facebook, Twitter and Domain Name
While researching our store name gonejunkin.com and gonejunkin usernames were already taken so we  decided to use gonejunkinnm.com and gonejunkinnm.  gonejunkin.com is really not used and since we are adding nm to a username our attorney said that was not a violation.

Now I will say if gonejunkin.com was used as a store or blog we would have chosen another name.  We would never use a name someone already has.  That isn't cool :(  My advice is to research everything before you officially decide on a name, address, etc.

Tomorrow I will get into setting up a storefront with Volusion, why I use them and licenses.

Money Saving Monday- Does Your Bank Respect You?

Does your bank respect you or does your bank swindle all your hard earned money with fees???

Think about that for a second.....

Do you pay a monthly fee because of your balance?

Do you get hit with a fee if you use your debit card frequently??

Does your bank have any identify theft protection???

Are you earning any interest????

I could go on and on but I really don't want you to call your bank today angry :)

Every bank is run differently and has different regulations but if your bank is nickeling and dime your account maybe it is time to bank shop???

My private checking account is with a local bank here in New Mexico but i also keep a savings account with checking privileges at a large national bank.  Why 2 banks??

My local bank pays a higher interest rate on my checking account and has no fees for transfers from savings.  Even if it is an overdraft situation! Now I will say I've had my checking account with them for years and I don't know if this is still available but for me it is awesome!!

Why the 2nd account??  If for some reason I am traveling and I have an issue I wanted a bank that I could go to in an emergency situation.  Also, they pay a higher interest rate on a basic savings account.

I encourage everyone to take a look at your bank.  Are they working for you or are they sucking your account dry $3 at a time.

Happy Mothers Day!

Happy Mothers Day!

Happy Mothers Day to all the dog mommas too!!  Brett and I do not have kids and have no intentions of having kids but I still get to celebrate Mothers Day because of these wise guys.

They may not be human but they are my children.  I take them to swim camps, doctors appointments, school (obedience), wake up for midnight bathroom breaks, Hank must eat promptly at 7:30 and 4:30 or the world will hear about it and I love them.

My dogs are so much more than dogs to me.  When people say "yeah I have to take my darn dog to the vet or i think I am going to giveaway my dog" it upsets me because your dog loves you more than you will ever know.  If you treat your dog well they will be by your side no matter what the situation is.  Their whole reason for existing is to be a companion animal.

If you can't treat your dog as a member of your family DON'T GET A DOG.  Don't get a cat.  Heck don't even get a fish!

My kids are way more than companions!  They are my world.

So HAPPY MOTHERS DAY TO ALL THE DOG MOMMAS!!!!

This morning I had a wonderful surprise waiting for me from my husband and kids.
Brett made a MAC run all by himself and he did good!!!!!!  I told him a few days ago that I am loving coral/pink lipstick.  For Mothers Day he purchased me a Mineralize Lipstick and lipliner.  What a great hubby!!!

Lipstick: Mineralize LADY AT PLAY
Lip Pencil: LASTING SENSATION

I am a happy girl :)  I haven't tried these on yet as we are cleaning house today and prepping for our market place booth but tomorrow I will test these out!  I already am in love with them  :)

How did you spend your Mothers Day?

Under $20 Ribbon Rack

I've needed ribbon and paper storage for my craft room for years.  I've never taken the time to search for a rack and i've kept my paper and ribbon stuck in  a box.  Out of site, out of mind.  :(  I never used any of it and would buy new whenever I needed something.  Such a waste of money!!

Brett and I headed over to The Home Depot for some backyard supplies and I left with supplies for my rack.  :)

What you need:
2    1"x2"x6' Pine Boards.  Always check to make sure your boards are straight
1 pack of 1.5" Nails
7 Dowel Rods.  Size depends on your cup hooks
1 Pack of large cup hooks
2 cans of spray paint
hammer
drill press (optional)
level
tape measurer

Total cost $18.67 (not including tools)

#1- Paint boards and dowel rods
#2- Measure your largest roll of paper or whatever you want to hang.  Leave about 2 or 3 inches on each side.  Trim dowel rods to fit

#3- Using drill press place holes for nails every 12 inches

#4-Using level nail board to wall.  Measure and nail 2nd board.
#5- Place cup hooks about 6 inches apart or measure the depth of your largest roll.

Ta da!!!!!  I chose to make my rack floor length so I have room to grow but you can totally adjust this to any length or diameter you would like.  This can be customized to fit your craft room.

My rack has 3 purposes.  It holds my ribbon, craft paper and tissue paper.  I love keeping my tissue paper folded over so it does not crease.  :)

I can't believe how much space this has saved me and I am so in love with it!

Day 8, Wednesday: A piece of advice you have for others. Anything at all.

Never let anything hold you back.  If you want it, get it!

I am a firm believer in being positive and setting goals.  If you have something you want to achieve write a list and set mini goals to help you get to your bigger goals.  Everything takes time.

I keep a list of 5 large goals at all times. Each goals has 10 mini goals below it.

Here is an example of one of my big goals.

Marketplace Booth in June- 2 weekends
mini goals to reach this goal
*check on business license
*find and paint 5 pieces of furniture
*create decor of booth
*10 repurpose pieces
*5 refashion pieces
*small banner-create
*tags- create
*paint faux deer heads
*make table covers

Achieving these goals will make my larger goal more attainable.

What are some of your goals??

Blog Every Day in May Day 6 & 7

Day 6, Monday: If you couldn't answer with your job, how would you answer the question, 'what do you do'?

What do I do?  Aside from my everyday job I am a blogger, a lover of fashion, a wanna be creative genius, dog mom and law enforcement wife.  My time is spent between this and my life revolves around my Bloodhound.

Day 7, Tuesday: The thing(s) you're most afraid of

I know I have mentioned this before but the thing I am the most afraid of is kissing my husband goodbye and that will be our last.  He is law enforcement and risks his life everyday.

Snakes creep me out too :/

Day #5- I want to be like Kay when I grow up

Day 5, Sunday: Publicly profess your love and devotion for one of your blogger friends. What makes them great? Why do you love them? If you don't have blogger friends, talk about a real-life friend or even a family member

I have met so many great friends blogging that I feel blessed every time i read a comment or email.  The friendships I've made keep me blogging.  I also enjoy reading all my favorite blogs.  With that being said there is no way I can pick just one.

I will share with you a quick story about a gal that I work with.  Kay is a women I respect and love like a Mother.  She is kind, sweet, respectful, funny, and always makes time for you.  Kay has a life story that you only read about in a book.

She was divorced in the 70s with 4 young girls.  She worked a full time job, raised her girls, and went to school for her Masters.  She retired from the government but not before living in Germany.

Even though money was tight she still put all 4 of her girls through college and each of them have their Masters.  One of her girls even has 2!

Kay married her current husband while working for the government and his kids became hers.  She will tell you that she has 7 kids, 20 grandkids and 1 great grand baby.

A few years ago she lost one of her daughters to cancer.  When one of our brokers in our office was dying she really helped me understand and she helped me grieve.  I've never been through this and it was very hard on me.  Kay and I spoke one day and she opened up about Raquel.  I quit crying that day.  If Kay can be strong enough to hold her daughter and watch her die I can be strong enough to realize Bart is not going to beat his cancer.  Shortly after Bart lost his battle.

Every morning Kay brings me breakfast.  I don't ask her to nor do I expect it.  Every morning I tell her Thank You and we start our day.

My family is 1500 miles away and Kay has become my surrogate Mom.  I know I can talk to her about anything and she will always give me the advice I need.  It may not be the advice I want but it will be the truth, LOL.

Aside from working together we both have a love of design and crafting.  We both have a creative spirit.  :)

I could go on forever about how great Kay is but I can sum it up quickly.  I want to be like Kay when I grow up :)

Blog Everyday in May #4- Favorite Quote

Day 4, Saturday: Favorite quote (from a person, from a book, etc) and why you love it

Source: tumblr.com via Karrie on Pinterest

One of my pet peeves is discrimination and I will never look down on someone because you do not know their story.

This is probably my favorite quote and I try to live by it. I try to remember that anytime I hear negativity or deal with a "hater" it only makes me stronger.

When I am really stressed sometimes all I need to do is hug my Bloodhound and everything is better. Your dog will love you even when you do not love yourself.

NEWS!!!!!! Excitement can't be contained any longer!!

After much consideration Brett and I have decided to start a creative business.  We have a local growers/marketplace called the Idalia Market close to our house so we decided to start renting a booth a couple of weekend a month.

Along with the booth space I am going to open a etsy AND a online consignment/refashion shop.  Why 2???  Etsy has some limitation on what you can sell when it comes to vintage or fashion.  With that being said I am going to avoid having any issues and open another shop strictly for fashion.  I also would like to open the store up (eventually) to other gals.

What are we going to sell??  Brett loves metal art and is creating a few pieces.  The heavier pieces will be sold at the marketplace but we will have some lighter pieces online.  I love all creative arts :)  I plan on having some refashions, bags, jewelry, home decor and all things chic ;)  Possibly some furniture at the marketplace.

I am up to my eyes in license, tax, etc but all the boring stuff has not put a damper on my excitement!!

I have no interest in leaving my current full-time job.  My job is amazing and I love what i do but I need a creative outlet and who doesn't want to make more $???

Also... GO REDWINGS!!!!!  I am sitting in my jammies watching my boys play the Ducks in the NHL playoffs.

Such a great day!!!

Would you be interested in me sharing our start up process on my blog?  I know sometimes this gets overwhelming and I would love to bounce ideas off my favorite gals :)

Blog Everyday in May #3

Day 3, Friday: Things that make you uncomfortable

3 things make me totally uncomfortable

#1- Discrimination
No one deserves to be discriminated against.  I don't care if they are gay, atheist, christian, mormon, catholic, rude, fat, skinny, hippy, homeless, etc.  Everyone deserves to be treated with respect.  If they are rude to you that is their problem.  They will have to answer for their actions.

#2-  Bad Mouthing Others
I grew up with the old saying "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all"

#3- Snakes
Snakes scare me.  :(

ARE YOU BLOGGING EVERYDAY IN MAY??  IF SO LEAVE ME YOUR LINK.  I'D LOVE TO VISIT!

April Hits and Misses

I actually didn't wear much makeup this month.  Between my job, family and getting sick I just didn't find much time.  I did pick a few of my hits and a few of my misses.  Enjoy!!!

A few of my favorites.  As you can tell I love bright lips!!
**Fashion Lashes from my BFF Treena.  Treenas Momma brought her a huge stash of lashes back from a trip a few years ago.  She was a sweetheart and sent me a box.  Love that girl!
**MAC Soft and Gentle Mineralize Skinfinish-  I don't think I could put makeup on without this highlighter.  It goes on smooth and retains a beautiful glow all day.
**MAC Matte Lipstick-Ablaze & Embrace Me-  Hubby purchased these for me and a gift and they are my 2 fav colors.  I love MAC lipsticks.  They last!
**Be A Bombshell Blush- Sweet Cheeks-  IPSY sent me this in my April bag and it is a pretty soft pink.  It has a slight hint of shimmer.
**MAC False Lash Mascara-  FAVORITE MASCARA!!!  I love this!  It lengthens and intensifies the lashes.  Another positive... It doesn't flake!!  Current holy grail mascara!
**Mirenesse Glossy Kiss Lipstick- Perfect Kiss-  This came in my April Birchbox and is the only thing out of that box I liked.  Beautiful rose pink color.
**UD NAKED Skin Beauty Balm-  I am so in love with this beauty balm.  I will purchase the full size.  It is really light on the skin and gives you coverage.  So awesome!
**Jordana FabuBrow- Medium Brown- Great inexpensive brow pencil and it comes with a comb on the end!
**MAC Lipglasses- Silly & Embrace Me-  I am wearing Silly ALL.OF.THE.TIME.  I can't get enough of these two colors.
**L'oreal Infalliable Eye Shadows- Bottomless Java & Eternal Black-  I love these shadows.  They have awesome coverage and sparkle.  They are so pretty on!

My Misses.  I am sure these products are great and some gals like them but they are just not for me.  :(
--Nailtini- Frappe-  I received this in a IPSY bag a few months ago and finally tried it.  The color was dull and streaky.
--Wet n' Wild Concealer- This does nothing to conceal my breakouts and makes my skin look so dry.
--NYC Applelicious Glossy Lip Balm- Not a fan.  This was not hydrating and no color payoff.
MAC Prep & Prime Highlighter in Light Boost-  I like this but I don't love it.  I've saw so many other bloggers wear it and it looks beautiful on them.  I don't like the twist applicator and it makes my skin look dry after a few hours.  I will use it up (eventually) but I will not repurchase it.
Wet n' Wild Eyeliner- Dislike!  They tug and do not last.  I will never repurchase.

What are some of your hits and misses?????

Blog Everyday in May

Maybe I can handle this challenge better than my April no spend and post an outfit pic everyday, HA!

I almost didn't start this challenge but I saw a few of my favorite bloggers participating and I thought the questions were really intriguing.  Since I am starting a day late I will combine the two.

Day 1, Wednesday: The story of your life in 250 words or less (or one paragraph... no one will be counting your words... probably)

I grew up in a small farming community in Michigan.  My family owned a cafe in my small town basically my whole life.  Growing up with the WW2 generation made me the person I am today.  I try to be respectful and nice, even when someone is difficult.  Growing up in a family owned business helped me to become a hard worker and value a dollar.  I always told people I was moving to Alaska after high school because I loved the cold!  Shortly after I graduated I started working in a pharmacy and I loved it.  While working at Rite Aid I was living with my grandparents.  What is a girl to do when she does not pay rent???  Buy a Ford Mustang.  Funny how that Mustang changed my life.

After buying my Mustang I met Brett.  He too had a Mustang.  After dating I decided to move to New Mexico.  Yes... a girl who said I love the cold and hate the heat is moving to New Mexico.  No one saw that coming.  I packed up everything i owned into my Mustang (basically clothes and shoes, HA!) and headed south.  Telling my Grandfather goodbye was the hardest thing I've ever done.  I will never forgive myself for making him cry.  I know he always wants the best for me and understood.  I didn't realize growing up would be so hard.

Shortly after moving we got married, found a great job, traded in the Mustang for a PT Cruiser, bought a house and adopted a Bloodhound.

Ok... so that is a bit more than 250 words :)

Day 2, Thursday: Educate us on something you know alot about or are good at. Take any approach you'd like (serious and educational or funny and sarcastic)

Risking sounding arrogant I will come out and say it.  I am a public speaking bad ass!

I have never been fearful of speaking in front of a crowd.  Heck.... I love being the center of attention.  6 years ago I started in a Toastmasters group.  Aside from typical club politics I loved Toastmasters.  It really helped me to polish my speaking skills.

I have been blessed with the gift of gab.  I can talk to anyone and sell anything.  :)  I talk to everyone like they are my girlfriend but when I am presenting I turn on "Professional Amanda".

The one tip I can give anyone who is scared of public speaking is relax.  No one is going to make fun of you or point and laugh.  Relax and practice!  Practice!  Practice!  Practice!  If you are nervous practice your speech until you know it by heart.  If you are comfortable with something you will present it well!

Seriously... If you are scared to speak in public visit a local Toastmasters Club.  You will be shocked with the results!!

Are you joining the Blog Everyday in May Challenge?  If so leave me your link.  I'd love to visit. :)
