Our Sad Backyard

Here is a basic map of our backyard.
Everything shown is currently in our backyard.  Our 10x10 pergola/patio is surrounded by a flower and garden bed.  We started creating 2 other beds/gardens.  Once our 14 year old Husky passes we will replace that area with a small storage shed.

Our backyard is about 30x40.

What we need:
*dog friendly
*large patio
*area for dining and relaxing
*area for our hammock
*grill/small outdoor kitchen
*space for a small storage shed
*easy maintenance
*cover concrete walls
*rustic and elegant
*lighting
*fire pit in relaxing area
*add colorful plants
*start our garden

We are snooping around Pinterest and The Home Depot Garden Club for some ideas.

It is important that our backyard be a place where we can relax and entertain.  The New Mexico weather is amazing and we love being outside!
This is our evening view :)

Are you working magic in your backyard this spring???

30 Day Shop My Closet Challenge Starts April 1st

Last weekend one of my favorite bloggers and friend Martha (Quick Cheap and Pretty) invited me to co-host a Shop My Closet Challenge for the month of April. Basically she banned me from any shopping during April and I had to wear the clothes in my closet. I am pretty sure she spoke with my husband and they planned this, LOL!! :)

 Of course I said yes!!!

From Quick Cheap and Pretty blog post "The goal of the 30 Day "Shop My Closet" Challenge is to put together a new and different outfit every day throughout the thirty days of April using only pieces already in your closet--no shopping for new pieces and no wearing the same outfit twice!" Sounds easy right???

Martha has created a link party for everyday!! You can link up on her blog (HERE) or on Mandy Jean Chic. Don't feel like you have to link up everyday to participate, you don't! You can link up on the days you want. :)

Everyday Martha and I will post our outfit and select a few of our favorites from the link party. Don't forget to visit other bloggers during the month and checkout their style!

If you have Twitter and Instagram we are using #30dayclosetshop :)

This is going to be super fun!

SPRING IS HERE! #DigIn

Every year Brett and I say we are going to finish landscaping our backyard. Every year we fail. This year WE WILL DO IT!! I honestly think part of the reason why we haven't finished is because our previous neighbors had dogs that barked all of the time and could never enjoy the space. The neighbors have moved and we want our yard back!!

Living in New Mexico we have some challenges when it comes to landscaping. The intense sun will eat wood within weeks (if it is not properly cared for), water is $$$$$ and shade is a must! We plan on tackling this projects with the help of The Home Depot Spring DIY Program.

Our backyard needs some work!!!

Where will I go to find some inspiration???  To the Garden Club, of course!

Head over to The Home Depots Garden Club and sign up!  The membership includes
*$5 off your next purchase of $50 or more when you sign up
*8 new projects to help you #digin to spring

*how-to videos

During your membership you will receive over $300 in savings, sneak peeks at new products, monthly lawn and garden ideas, and more!

Having a small yard I found this pin very helpful!  Don't forget to follow them on Pinterest too!!

31 Day Blog Challenge- Day #11

I recently found this challenge on a blog and wanted to start.  This was started on March 1st but it's never to late to start right???
Day #11- the last book your read

I love reading but sometimes I don't find the time.  The last book I read was called "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society"

From Amazon
"January 1946: writer Juliet Ashton receives a letter from a stranger, a founding member of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. And so begins a remarkable tale of the island of Guernsey during the German occupation, and of a society as extraordinary as its name."

This book is amazing!!  I love books that are set during World War II and this book is just awesome!!! It is funny, romantic and honestly I finished it in one night.

If you are looking for a great beach read this summer you should really check it out!

Guest Post- Erin from Two Thirds Hazel

A couple of weeks ago I asked a few of my favorite blogging chicas if they would like to write a few guests posts and the ever so beautiful and talented Erin said yes!

Thanks Erin!!
******************************************************

Hi, I'm Erin! And I blog over at Two Thirds Hazel. A place where nothing is expected and most everything is entirely random.
Let's get started with a little background noise shall we? I'm going to show you where I grew up, where I live now, and then a few things you should probably know if we're going to be friends, which we are by the way (just to let you know). Let's get the show on the road.
My Hometown (Ithaca, NY):
It's right in the middle of the Finger Lakes region where there are tons of awesome wineries, great schools, pick up trucks, humble people, farmer's markets, apple orchards, rednecks, forests, pristine waterfalls, and country music. It's heaven to a lot but hell to those who know it in the winter. But I only lived there until I no longer needed mommy and daddy's help money to survive. Then I hightailed it out of there to college which then brought me to where I live now.
My Current Home: New York, NY:
It's is a whole heck of a lot different from my hometown, as you can imagine. At home the cows outnumber the humans...here the cabs outnumber the humans. But I'm having the time of my life in the greatest city in the world and I wouldn't really trade it for anything. Except for maybe a condo on the beach filled to the brim with chocolate covered strawberries and peach rings. Hey, a girl can dream.
A few things you should know:
(1)
I really love am disgustingly obsessed with puppies, but NYC is too expensive for me to have one right now. So instead, I will pet random dogs on the street, know more puppy names than human names in my apartment building, and blog about them constantly (which will totally annoy you).
(2)
I love the New York Yankees. A LOT. Like Robinson Cano is my boyfriend a lot. But I try not to talk about sports too much because you will probably get annoyed with that too.
(3)
I also really like the New York Giants. But I obviously don't listen to my own advice because I just talked about sports...again.
I will attempt to not hate on Boston teams.
But I make no promises.
(4)
I like Blue Moons/wine/sangria/margaritas/etc. (and talk about it a lot too) but I promise to goodness gracious that I'm not an alchy!
(5)
And finally, sarcasm is my middle name and I rarely take life seriously, so I might not take you seriously if you're going to be at all serious about my non-serious blogging. That is all :)

Others:

*Faking sick
*Constantly being negative
*Posting your problems on facebook and getting an attitude when someone gives you advice
*My husband not texting me back when I know he read it

What are some of your pet peeves???

Quick trip to The Home Depot

Like every spring we get "yard work fever". Our backyard is basically a wasteland. We have no landscaping, only 1 tree and it is just a sad place. We never sit out there because it is just to depressing :( This spring/summer we will work on the yard.

Our plans include:
finishing large patio
building an outdoor kitchen
re-staining the pergola
add shade
landscape
hardscape
small garden
water feature
new patio furniture
raise wall on right side
outdoor lighting
add some color and breakup the block walls
dress up patio and pergola
add 1 more tree

As always when we are bored or need some inspiration we head over to The Home Depot.

As soon as we stroll into the garden area we saw these fruit trees. They had a great selection of Pears and Apples.

We chose a pear tree.  For $21.98 you cant beat the price!!  These trees were healthy!

I spy a little garden in our future this summer :)
Raised gardens are such an awesome space saver!!

We definitely want to build a fire pit.  I am thinking some comfy adirondak chairs for relaxing by a fire.  Do you like circle or square??  The square one can double as a small grill!!  How cool is that??

I love the idea of a planting bench/wall.  This would be so awesome around our pergola to act as a little separation.

Believe it or not New Mexico does have a little rain.  This would be perfect to catch our run off.  i also love that is looks like a wine barrel.

Our local Home Depot always has beautiful flowers!!

I had to resist buying.  I guarantee that if I would have purchased flowers we would have a cold spell :)

The view from our local Home Depot.  We are so lucky!!!

What are your landscaping plans this summer???

31 Day Blog Challenge- Day #7

I recently found this challenge on a blog and wanted to start.  This was started on March 1st but it's never to late to start right???
Day #7- What's your dream job?

My dream job would be to own a boutique selling my designs.  I love repurposing furniture, clothing, jewelry and all things chic.  Part 2 to my dream job would allow me the time to stay on top of my blog.

I would love to own a small boutique and a workshop.  A life as an artist appeals to me. :)

If I had to choose a 8-5 M-F job I would become an Investment Advisor.  I currently work for a LPL branch and love it!!

What is your dream job??

31 Day Blog Challenge- Day #6

I recently found this challenge on a blog and wanted to start.  This was started on March 1st but it's never to late to start right???

Day #6- Your last random act of kindness
I try to be a good person and do the right thing.  If I see people on the side of the road I try to give them my change, I donate as much as I can, and I volunteer.  I don't do these things because I feel a need to.  I do them to be nice.

My last act of kindness was a few days ago.  If I am grabbing lunch or dinner and see a law enforcement officer I always try to buy their lunch.  If they have already paid I buy a $5 gift card and tell them thank you.  Being a cop wife I now how difficult the job is.

What was your last random act of kindness???

I recently found this challenge on a blog and wanted to start.  This was started on March 1st but it's never to late to start right???

Day #4- Best childhood memory

I grew up in a small farming village in Michigan.  For the most part I had a great childhood.  I have 2 favorite memories.

#1- Spending summers camping by Lake Michigan with my Grandparents
I love the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  My favorite campground is one on Lake Michigan.  One year my Grandparents had a pop up camper and the best night of sleep I've ever had was feeling the cool Lake Michigan breeze and listening to the waves.  I will never forget that.

#2- Showing dogs with my Grandma
From the time I could run around the ring with a dog I've been showing dogs.  We would be on the road at least 2 weekends a month showing dogs.   Wonderful memories.

What are your favorite childhood memories???

My husband
We have been married for 6 years and I love him more everyday.  He is my partner, the love of my life, my hero and the man who makes my heart beat alittle faster.

Hank, the Bloodhound

Hank is my boy.  This dog has made me a better person and I love him for that.  He makes me smile when I am sad, laugh when I am mad and loves me when I don't love myself.

My FJ Cruiser
Her name is Abby and she is a bad ass.  She allows me to go on my adventures and always brings me home safe.

New Mexico

The Land of Enchantment indeed!  New Mexico is full of beauty and history.

4x4 Adventures with friends
The best friends are ones that say "don't worry it will buff out"
