Re-Use Bulletin Board

As I am sure you have figured out by my blog I love to re-use and re-cycle.  I have been working on updating my craft room for about a month now and I am working on a tight budget.  I work in a financial services branch full time and one of my bosses (and friend!) has beat into my head "DO NOT PAY FULL PRICE FOR ANYTHING AND IF YOU DO IT BETTER BE GOOD QUALITY!"  Jerome has taught me many tips and tricks for being "frugal".  Before I realized how easy and kinda fun it is to be frugal I used to call him cheap.  I take back all the cheap comments I ever made.

A few weeks back I was hitting up some yard sales in my neighborhood and I came across this bulletin board for $2.  I couldn't decide if I liked it or not but decided for $2 I could figure out a use for it.

The first thing I did was sanded the paint and finish off.  After I cleaned it well I painted 2 coats of "Rose" by Valspar.  Same color as my spice rack organizer.

This was my first project where I decided to use crackle paint.  I love the look!  My bulletin board did not come out perfect but for my first project I think it looks pretty good :)  About a year ago Lowes had their Valspar crackle paint on clearance and I picked up a pint of it.  The trick was to use flat paints and let the crackle work its magic.  A tip I have is when painting the final coat (over the crackle paint) paint it and LEAVE IT ALONE!  If you paint over it again you will pull up the paint.  Lesson learned the hard way!
Once the crackle was done and everything was dry I used a coat of poly and added some yarn flowers.  Done :)

My craft room is still a work in progress but here are some sneak peaks!!

I *heart* peg board.  This is painted the same color as my spice rack and bulletin board.  I am working on trimming it out as we speak.  Post to follow :)

Thrift Store clock.  Was a bright gold color.  Hats off to Valspar black spray paint with a gloss finish.  SUPER CUTE against my pink walls!

Crazy thing I call a book shelf.  Believe it or not it is organized!

Thrifty Craft Room Organizing-Spice Rack

A few weeks ago I picked up two spice racks at an estate sale for $3/rack.  Originally I was going to use both of them in my craft room as storage but my hubby stole one for the kitchen.  I needed storage for my quick use paints and thread.

The first step into making over these treasures was to sand off the dated paint.  The rack itself was in good shape :)

Painting the rack was a HUGE pain!  I ended up using 2 coats of rose by valspar.  This paint is a re-use from my craft room.

My finished rack.  I purchased the glitter letters from Walmart in the scrapbook section and the yard flowers are a Michaels clearance.  Sorry for the bad cell pics.  I still can't find my camera. :(

More thrifty craft room organizing tomorrow....  Sneak Peak...

Office Supply Art by Tati and Mandy

Friday afternoon was kinda slow in our office.  After the market closed we had about an hour left in our work week.  With Thursdays 500 point drop in the dow we needed a fun project.  :)  Tati is the receptionist for our office.  She turns 18 years old today (HAPPY BDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and is a brilliant young woman.

I first met her when she was about 13 or 14.  She spent a couple of summers filing in the office and doing small projects.  I can't describe how proud I am of her.  She graduated 7th in her high school and received an academic scholarship to attend UNM.  What an accomplishment!

Tati has spent the summer helping me out in the office.  Our receptionist left in May and I needed someone I could count on for the summer.  Like always Tati was there.  :)  We spent the whole summer of 2011 listening to def leppard and trying to keep our laughter down.

Tati is a very creative gal and she MUST be organized.  She even organizes me. :)  Friday afternoon we were done with our tasks, the office was quiet so I asked her to clean out my desk drawer just to kill time.  Keep in mind we were also listening to our favorite def leppard songs as loud as my office speakers would go.  As Tati was cleaning she decided to make everyone in the office a going away present.

She made everyone in the office an "Office Supply Wreath"  I told you this girl was creative!  After I saw her first one I told her we need to take pics for my blog with instructions!

STEP #1- CLEAN OUT YOUR DESK

STEP 2- CREATE RUBBER BAND BALL.  (I don't know why but Tati likes them)

STEP 3- CLIP MED BINDER CLIPS TOGETHER IN A CIRCLE

STEP 4- ADD 2ND ROW OF MEDIUM CLIPS

STEP 5- ADD SMALL CLIPS

STEP 6- ADDED COLORFUL EMBELLISHMENTS

So there you go... Fun office inspired wreaths by Tati :)

Shut the Front Door!!

We have the most boring entry porch ever! When we first bought our house it looked like this (2008):

As of July 24, 2011 it looks like this:
Don't get excited. It didn't rain :(  The water is from my sprinklers :(

Our front door is towards the rear of our home.  This means you have to walk around the side of our home to get to the front door.
Usually my flowers look amazing this time of year but importunately it has been so hot and dry in New Mexico I just gave up.  I have already pulled the dead flowers out and I am just calling it a year.  We liked the idea of lining our walk way with pots of flowers to made the long walk to the front door a pretty one.  :)

Now.... for the most boring entry EVER!  Brace yourself... This will get ugly....

Are you ready?

Cover the kids eyes please....

To jazz up this entry I want to paint my front door.  Now I have a HOA and need to be careful with my color choices.  Below are some of my ideas from pinterest.com.

I love this blue!  I was thinking about adding tile to my walk way.

I think a soft blue like this would help to add softness and brighten up the dark area.  What do you think?

Yellow would defiantly bring some life to the space.

Aaahhh..... the drama of a beautiful red front door (Hubby already says no)

Hmmm... I do not think we have any purple front doors in my neighborhood.  I like to be different :)

Hubby hates green but I am posting it anyways :)

I think a beautiful front door and entry area set the tone and mood for your home.  That is why I am on a mission to jazz mine up.  I refuse to live in a beige world!!!

THE PROJECT LIST
  • Paint the Front Door
  • Tile Entry Area
  • Clean All Pots
  • Replant Dead Shrubs
  • Add Flower Baskets Under Window
  • New Door Mat
  • New Light Fixture
  • Privacy Gates
Now for some more inspiration from Pinterest.com
Must get these numbers!

Love the potted plants and symmetry
The faux bricks are super cute!!

So to wrap this blog post up.  What color door do you like??  What ideas do you have to jazz up my entry??
