Thrifty Craft Room Organizing-Spice Rack

A few weeks ago I picked up two spice racks at an estate sale for $3/rack.  Originally I was going to use both of them in my craft room as storage but my hubby stole one for the kitchen.  I needed storage for my quick use paints and thread.

The first step into making over these treasures was to sand off the dated paint.  The rack itself was in good shape :)

Painting the rack was a HUGE pain!  I ended up using 2 coats of rose by valspar.  This paint is a re-use from my craft room.

My finished rack.  I purchased the glitter letters from Walmart in the scrapbook section and the yard flowers are a Michaels clearance.  Sorry for the bad cell pics.  I still can't find my camera. :(

More thrifty craft room organizing tomorrow....  Sneak Peak...

Office Supply Art by Tati and Mandy

Friday afternoon was kinda slow in our office.  After the market closed we had about an hour left in our work week.  With Thursdays 500 point drop in the dow we needed a fun project.  :)  Tati is the receptionist for our office.  She turns 18 years old today (HAPPY BDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and is a brilliant young woman.

I first met her when she was about 13 or 14.  She spent a couple of summers filing in the office and doing small projects.  I can't describe how proud I am of her.  She graduated 7th in her high school and received an academic scholarship to attend UNM.  What an accomplishment!

Tati has spent the summer helping me out in the office.  Our receptionist left in May and I needed someone I could count on for the summer.  Like always Tati was there.  :)  We spent the whole summer of 2011 listening to def leppard and trying to keep our laughter down.

Tati is a very creative gal and she MUST be organized.  She even organizes me. :)  Friday afternoon we were done with our tasks, the office was quiet so I asked her to clean out my desk drawer just to kill time.  Keep in mind we were also listening to our favorite def leppard songs as loud as my office speakers would go.  As Tati was cleaning she decided to make everyone in the office a going away present.

She made everyone in the office an "Office Supply Wreath"  I told you this girl was creative!  After I saw her first one I told her we need to take pics for my blog with instructions!

STEP #1- CLEAN OUT YOUR DESK

STEP 2- CREATE RUBBER BAND BALL.  (I don't know why but Tati likes them)

STEP 3- CLIP MED BINDER CLIPS TOGETHER IN A CIRCLE

STEP 4- ADD 2ND ROW OF MEDIUM CLIPS

STEP 5- ADD SMALL CLIPS

STEP 6- ADDED COLORFUL EMBELLISHMENTS

So there you go... Fun office inspired wreaths by Tati :)

Shut the Front Door!!

We have the most boring entry porch ever! When we first bought our house it looked like this (2008):

As of July 24, 2011 it looks like this:
Don't get excited. It didn't rain :(  The water is from my sprinklers :(

Our front door is towards the rear of our home.  This means you have to walk around the side of our home to get to the front door.
Usually my flowers look amazing this time of year but importunately it has been so hot and dry in New Mexico I just gave up.  I have already pulled the dead flowers out and I am just calling it a year.  We liked the idea of lining our walk way with pots of flowers to made the long walk to the front door a pretty one.  :)

Now.... for the most boring entry EVER!  Brace yourself... This will get ugly....

Are you ready?

Cover the kids eyes please....

To jazz up this entry I want to paint my front door.  Now I have a HOA and need to be careful with my color choices.  Below are some of my ideas from pinterest.com.

I love this blue!  I was thinking about adding tile to my walk way.

I think a soft blue like this would help to add softness and brighten up the dark area.  What do you think?

Yellow would defiantly bring some life to the space.

Aaahhh..... the drama of a beautiful red front door (Hubby already says no)

Hmmm... I do not think we have any purple front doors in my neighborhood.  I like to be different :)

Hubby hates green but I am posting it anyways :)

I think a beautiful front door and entry area set the tone and mood for your home.  That is why I am on a mission to jazz mine up.  I refuse to live in a beige world!!!

THE PROJECT LIST
  • Paint the Front Door
  • Tile Entry Area
  • Clean All Pots
  • Replant Dead Shrubs
  • Add Flower Baskets Under Window
  • New Door Mat
  • New Light Fixture
  • Privacy Gates
Now for some more inspiration from Pinterest.com
Must get these numbers!

Love the potted plants and symmetry
The faux bricks are super cute!!

So to wrap this blog post up.  What color door do you like??  What ideas do you have to jazz up my entry??

SGT. Joe Harris EOW 07/16/2009

Remembering a fallen hero, SGT. Joseph Harris, Sandoval County Sheriff's Office

From the odmp.org

Sergeant Joe Harris was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a burglary suspect along New Mexico 126 at approximately 6:45 am. He and another deputy were conducting a stakeout due to a rash of recent cabin burglaries in the area.

The deputies attempted to take the man into custody when they observed him breaking into a home. Sergeant Harris and the suspect were both fatally wounded in the ensuing shootout.

An investigation revealed that the killer had fled to Canada during the Vietnam War to avoid the draft. He was wanted in British Columbia, Canada, for a 1972 double murder of two campers.

Sergeant Harris had served with the Sandoval County Sheriff's Office for six years and had previously retired from the Rio Rancho Police Department after 20 years of service. He is survived by his wife and five children.

New Desk for Craft Space

My computer is fixed finally.  After 4 days without it I promised to treat it better and never let it go again :)  During my 4 day internet and computer break I decided to work on some of my projects for my craft room.

I desperately needed a new desk. I have a large desk my husband built but when he is using the computer and I want to craft it doesn't work.  My craft room is shaped like a big box.  We decided to put 2 desks (one of each wall).  I was cruising by a yard sale a couple of weeks ago and they had a brand new IKEA desk for $50.00  It was still in the box and she promised everything was in good condition.  I offered her $25 and she said, ok!  I was very excited as I loaded this desk into Pt Cruiser.

The desk looked like this but a oak color.  According to IKEA's website it is called Leksvik and sells for $149!
After I got home I started opening this beauty up.  My heart sank!!  The top was broken and I was missing 2 pieces.  I talked to my hubby and he said he would cut the missing pieces and gave me some ideas for a top.  I am a sucker for black anything with a marble top.  We went to two big box stores and I just didn't want to spend $50 on Marble for the top and add extra weight.  I remembered I bought this great contact paper at dollar tree and I loved the pattern.  My hubby painted the desk black for me and helped me cover the top in contact paper.  He even lined up the edges for me. lol!!  God bless him!

After 5 coats of poly on top here is the finished desk :)  Enjoy!

I painted the hardware.  All the hardware in my craft room is silver :)
I added some shelf liner to the drawer and cushion and it covers up that I was to lazy to paint the inside. :)

All together this desk cost me around $35.00!
